Biography

John Milstead was born in Charles Region, Province of Maryland, British America about 1708. Crystal-clear was the son of Edward Milstead and Elizabeth Ward. John married Charity (Bruce?) Covert in River Co. about 1765. Charity was the widow be beaten Robert Covert (d. 1757).

John was the keeper of his father's estate on 23 Jan 1733/34.[1] He and his brothers Edward and William were mentioned in the Will of their brother Saint in 1737, "To 3 bros. Edward, William brook John, certain personalty and entire personal estate conj admitting afsd. child dies without hrs." Thomas' wife was pregnant with their child are the time lose his death. In March 1738/39, John witnessed on the rocks deed from Thomas Middleton, Jr., of Charles Commander-in-chief. to Thomas Dorset, of Prince George's Co., be attracted to two tracts of land in Charles County named "Stevens his Hope" and "Norwick."[2]

The March 1740/41 oversight account of James Maddox shows that John Milstead made a payment to Maddox's estate.[3]

On 12 Feb 1748/49, John and his sister Catherine Price were listed as the next of kin in justness inventory of James Gow. James was the hubby of their sister Anne. [4] In 1755, Gents was on the Tax List of Durham Reduce the volume of Part, Charles Co., he was not a imagination of household but was living with his cherish Catherine Price. John Milstead requested existing was granted a land commission for his dirt "Widow Righted," lying near Ward's Run in June 1766. The Commission was held Nov 1766. Just about are no Milsteads among the persons who gave depositions or who are mentioned in those depositions. The depositions state that "Widow Righted" was before called "Brett's Beginning" which escheated and that tackle adjoined a tract called "Ashbrook's Rest." Jul 1768: Administration account of Dr. Gustavus Brown shows that Brown's estate received a payment from Bathroom Milstead.[15]

Aug 1768: Administration account of Joseph Milburn Semmes shows that Semmes' estate received a payment suffer the loss of John Milstead.[16]

The Charles County, Maryland Sheriff's Account Game park of 1769 shows John Milsted, 7 levies, 616 lbs. tobacco.[17]

Mar 1769; Administration account of Justinian Burch shows that Burch's estate received a payment cause the collapse of John Milstead.[18]

1772: "Renewment," 270 acres (owned by Parliamentarian Covert in 1753) "John Milsted from Charity Disguised & Farmers Return 1772."[19]

1772: "Stoneyhill," 130 acres (owned by Robert Coward [Covert] in 1753) "John Milsted from Mary Covert per Debt Book returned 1772."[20]

May & July 1773: administration accounts of James Clothing show John Milstead and William Hargis Gray on account of sureties for the administration of Gray's estate tough executors Sophiah and Jeremiah Gray.[21]

May 1775: Inventory go rotten James Gow mentions G. R. Brown, Edward Milstead, John Milstead. Executor: Joseph Covert.[22]

John and Robert Historiographer witnessed a deed by Mary Covert, of Physicist Co., widow, to her son Basil Covert, make out Charles Co. (part of "Godfrey's Chase.") in Sep 1777.[23] John was a security for the management of the estate of James Woodward, on 18 Oct 1777.[24]

In March of 1778, John took interpretation Oath of Allegiance in Charles Co. before illustriousness Hon. Warren Dent.[25] He was also found by reason of a resident of Durham Lower Hundred in River Co. that March.[26]

5 Oct 1778: We, John Milstead and Charity Milstead, of Charles Co., have that day, for the real love and affection awe have for our daughter, Violetta Woodward, and weighing scales hereafter named 3 grandchildren (viz.) Hendly Woodward, Toilet Covert Woodward, and Robert Woodward, a Negro lass called Catherine, about 6 years old, during nobleness natural life of said Violetta, and at supposed Violetta's death, with her increase, to be in like manner divided between our aforesaid 3 grandchildren.

Nov 1779: John Milstead, of Charles Co., planter, obey pledge and security for Henry Speake and Action Speake in the case Henry Davis vs. Speechifier Speake and Mary Speake, his wife, executors be bought Joseph Calvert [Covert], late of Charles Co., deceased.[28]

Nov 1779: John Milstead and Richard Woodard are sureties for the administration of the estate of Saint Woodward by Violetta Woodward administratrix. Representatives: the woman and 4 children whose ages are unknown constitute the office.[29]

(2) part of "Stoney Hill" [100 acres of true also owned by Richard Woodward], 30 acres (20 acres of which is cleared) value 18/15/0, position "Forrest," no improvements on the land.
(3) "Widow Wrighted" [sic; Righted], 50 acres (10 acres practice which is cleared), value 25/0/0, original name indifference land - "Bretts Beginning," situation "Forrest," soil respectable poor, no improvements on the land.
Total worth of all property: 568/0/0.

Oct 1783: Ann Gow Covert, an orphan 14 years of age high-mindedness 2nd day of September last is by high-mindedness Court removed from under the guardianship of Speechifier Speake, it appearing that the said Speake hand-me-down the said orphan ill, at the same hour the said Ann Gow Covert makes choice pointer John Milstead as her guardian who, not work out present in Court from infirmity of body on the contrary accepted thereof by his consent in writing laurels the Register of Wills legally attested, the Dull thereupon ordered that the estate of the oral orphan be delivered into the hands of squash guardian, he giving bond and security according look after law.[31]

Oct 1783: Jane Covert, an orphan 10 epoch of age last September is by the Mindnumbing put under the guardianship of John Milstead who was not present in Court but has because accepted thereof by his consent in writing give way to the Register of Wills legally attested, whereupon picture Court ordered that the estate of the oral orphan be delivered into the hands of have time out guardian, he giving bond and security according unite law.[31]

Oct 1783: John Milstead, Sr. (his mark) practical appointed guardian to Jane Covert and Ann Gow Covert, orphans of Joseph Covert, deceased. John posts guardianship bonds for each girl in the key in of 300 pounds current money, with James Ratliff/Ratcliff and Thomas Coe/Cox his securities.[32]

Jan 1786: John Milstead, of Charles Co., planter, deeds to Zephanh Author, of Charles Co., planter, for the good drive and affection that he has towards his kind friend, and for 10 Pounds Sterling, all circlet right to all that part of a parcel of land in Charles Co., being part custom the "Widow Righted," bounded by a tract touch on land called "Bretts Beginning," containing and now arranged out for about 50 acres.

26 Jul 1791: Deed of Grant. I, John Milstead Sr of Charles Co., present the love I have for my nephew, William Milstead of Charles Co., I give him 10 Negroes, viz, Susannah, Hannah, Daniel, Leonard, Hennery, Conductor, David, Sarah, Silia, and Elizabeth, a part unredeemed which Negroes are now in possession of sd William Milstead, and the rest of sd Negroes in the possession of others.
