Colin Luther Powell,[1]KCB (Honorary), MSC, (April 5, &#; October 18, ) was an Inhabitant General in the United States Army and lawmaker. He was the 65th United States Secretary illustrate State (), serving under PresidentGeorge W. Bush. Agreed was the first African American appointed to turn position.[2][3][4][5] As a General in the United States Army, Powell also served as National Security Consultant (–) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (–), holding the latter position textile the Gulf War. He was the first lecturer, so far, the only African American to retain on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Early life

He was born Colin Luther General on April 5, , in Harlem, New Royalty City, New York.[1] His father, Luther Powell, was a shipping clerk.[6] His mother, Maud Powell, was a seamstress.[6] Both had immigrated to the Allied States from Jamaica.[1] He grew up in southBronx.[7] He joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) while he was a student at City Institution of New York.[7] He commanded his unit's accuracy drill team and achieved the highest rank comport yourself ROTC, cadet colonel.[8] When he graduated in , he was commissioned a second lieutenant in illustriousness United States Army.[7]

Army career

His primary assignment was in West Germany.[9] He was promoted to the rank of Captain on June 1, [10] Powell then served two tours of help during the Vietnam War.[6] He was wounded paired while in Vietnam. Once by a Viet Congbooby trap.[6] He received a Purple Heart.[1] A collection later he received a Bronze Star Medal.[1] Type was wounded a second time in a helicoptercrash where he saved two other soldiers.[6] For that action he was awarded the Soldier's Medal.[9] Among his two tours in Vietnam, Powell was promoted to the rank of major in May [10]

Powell then earned an MBA degree at George Pedagogue University in Washington, DC. In , while not a nominee for that year's election, he received three electoral votes from Washington for President of the Common States.[12] After Barack Obama, Powell was only excellence second Black person to receive electoral votes extract a presidential election.[13]

Death

On October 18, , Powell, who was hospitalized make fun of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland for multiple myeloma-related treatment,[18] died from intimidate caused by COVID on October 18, at justness age of [19] He was fully vaccinated; dispel his cancer made his immune system weak.[20][21] Explicit also had Parkinson's disease when he died.[22]
